Community Members Help District Shape Mentoring Program
On Friday, Dec. 12, representatives from more than a dozen community groups gathered with Penfield Central School District leaders for a collaborative discussion focused on mentorship.
Led by Maycanitza Pérez, Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services, the session generated a spirited conversation that will help the District as it develops a mentoring program for high school students.
“Guidance and investment,” were two phrases that David Bryant III, account executive at WDKX, said came to mind when thinking about mentorship.
Bryant spoke of his time as an intern with the radio station and how it taught him the ins and outs of radio broadcasting, media, and marketing. He said he is interested in helping the next generation of communication professionals while giving back to the station that provided him with such a rich learning experience.
Representatives from other agencies spoke about their willingness to offer Penfield students shadowing experiences or opportunities for informational interviews that can help them explore various careers and fields.
“It’s exposing young people to what’s out there,” noted one participant.
As next steps, the District plans to create a directory of professionals who are willing to volunteer as mentors for Penfield students.
“It’s important for us to share our stories about how mentoring has influenced our own careers,” said Pérez. “There is so much collective wisdom in the community and that creates a wonderful opportunity to positively impact students as they move through school.”
The session also included a focus group discussion facilitated by ILO Group, who is working with the District to craft its five-year strategic plan.
